Meyer undecided on rotation for Weber, Dobbins

Mike Weber is back in the plans. J.K. Dobbins proved against Indiana that he is ready to play running back in major college football, even as a freshman.

Now it’s up to Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and his offensive staff to come up with a plan that includes both players headed toward the secondranked Buckeyes’ Saturday night home opener against No. 7 Oklahoma.

“I haven’t figured that out yet,” Meyer said after Monday’s practice, held at midday because of the Labor Day holiday, which meant no school. “They will both play.

“We haven’t figured out the exact rotation. Mike had a good practice today. He went full speed.”

Weber could have played in an emergency at Indiana last Thursday night, and he went through pregame warmups. But he wasn’t full-go from the hamstring strain that kept him out of most of preseason camp, and he was held out while Dobbins and Antonio Williams carried the load against the Hoosiers.

Dobbins became just the second true freshman running back in school history to start a season opener, the other being Maurice Clarett in the 2002 national championship season. Dobbins rushed for 181 yards and caught two passes for 24 yards, a performance that earned him the Big Ten freshman of the week award.

The latest came in the wake of his performance at Indiana, in which he had 365 yards of total offense — 304 passing with three touchdowns, and 61 rushing with one TD — that pushed him to No. 1 on the OSU career total offense list at 9,211 yards.

TD taken away

The slow-motion video of defensive tackle Robert Landers showed a big man making athletic moves as he rumbled toward the end zone and an apparent touchdown against the Hoosiers. The third-year sophomore from Dayton picked up what he thought was a fumble by Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow, took off downfield and even held onto the football as a Hoosiers player tried to pry it loose over the last 15 yards to the end zone.

It was a signaled as a touchdown on the field, but the call was overturned by the replay official and ruled an incomplete pass.

“I was heartbroken,” Landers said Monday of seeing what would have been his first collegiate touchdown taken away. “That’s every fat boy’s dream.”

Smiling, the 6-foot1, 283-pounder quickly corrected himself.

“I’m not fat,” he said. “I’m just thick around the edges.”

He’s gone

It was learned Saturday that reserve receiver Eric GloverWilliams, a junior from Canton, was no longer on the team. When asked about Glover-Williams on Monday, Meyer said it was a “school conduct issue,” but he did not elaborate. GloverWilliams played in all 13 games last year, primarily on special teams, and had been moved to hybrid back this season on offense.
