Fun decor: DIY yarn orbs

- By Dena Fishbein

Looking to brighten up your next party? These colorful yarn orbs are perfect for any occasion. String them into a garland or mobile, or cluster them in a bowl for a centerpiece.

To start, gather:

■ ½ cup cornstarch

■ ¼ cup warm water

■ A bottle of school glue ■ Nonstick spray

■ Balloons

■ Clothes pins

■ Scissors

1. Tie a clothesline or string between two chairs. Place newspaper underneath to catch any drips.

2. Blow up your balloons, but not all the way so you can make the orbs more spherical.

3. Hang your balloons with clothespins on the drying line, and spray them lightly and evenly with nonstick spray.

4. In a big bowl, mix ½ cup cornstarch with ¼ cup of warm water until combined. Add the bottle of school glue and mix well.

5. Dip yarn into the glue mixture and squeeze out excess.

6. Start at the knot of a balloon and wrap yarn in all directions until you’re satisfied with the look. Snip the yarn and tuck to secure.

7. Wait 24 hours for the glue to dry. Once it feels brittle, carefully push and knead the balloon to separate it from the yarn. Then pop the balloon and remove it.

8. String the orbs on twine to make a garland or do anything else. The options are endless!
