NFL doesn’t deserve my support

-

Most Americans understand that freedom of speech is one of our most valuable rights. Without question, NFL owners and players have the right to do or say what they want in front of pro football fans. Yet I didn’t put much weight on anything either had to say or do this past weekend. Why? Because they got a free shot at exposing their views to a captive audience.

Do you think that the owners would be so supportive if revenues fell as a result of the players’ exercise of free speech? I doubt it. Do you think that the players would be as “socially conscious” if their take-home checks were reduced due to reduced TV/ ticket/advertising/apparel sales? I doubt it.

The original message of police brutality was diluted by such claims as “team unity,” “social injustice” and “divisions in society brought about by the president.” I even heard one person say that by not standing in respect of the flag the players were paying the ultimate respect to the flag.

So now I get to utilize my First Amendment rights, not just by writing this short piece, but by informing the NFL and its owners that players are paid to play. not preach.

I strongly disagree with their treatment of the flag, our national anthem, and those who have fought and died for me. I have decided to not support the NFL.
