Colts honor Manning with statue outside stadium
The Indianapolis Colts unveiled a statue of Peyton Manning on a plaza outside Lucas Oil Stadium in a ceremony attended by hundreds of fans and featuring remarks from Hall of Famers coach Tony Dungy and executive Bill Polian, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
The five-time NFL MVP concluded the event Saturday by proclaiming, “I will always be a Colt” and throwing autographed footballs into the crowd.
The bronze likeness features Manning in his Colts uniform preparing to throw a pass.
“I keep checking my health to make sure everything checks out,” Manning said Friday. “I’m not sure you’re supposed to be alive to see something like this.”
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels also spoke, as did longtime Colts center Jeff Saturday. Even David Letterman made a surprise appearance in what Manning informally dubbed an all-Indiana event with the exception of Goodell.
Ravens have been frequent fl yers
By the time the Baltimore Ravens return Sunday night from Oakland, they will have traveled more than 24,000 miles across nine times zones.
Baltimore made its first trip to London on Sept. 24, played at home last week and left for a cross-country trip on Friday.
Going out west is one thing. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean for a football game is another. After the Ravens got beat by Jacksonville 44-7 in London, coach John Harbaugh said he had no intention of going back.
“I’m not planning on having that conundrum again for a while,” he said earlier this week. “We’ll see how that goes, but I think teams going out there have had their issues, for sure, and then even coming back.”
In its first game back, Baltimore looked listless in a 26-9 loss to Pittsburgh last Sunday.
Philly Brown gets let go by Bills
The Buffalo Bills promoted cornerback Greg Mabin from the practice squad and released former Ohio State receiver Philly Brown, four days after signing him.
Cutting Brown leaves the Bills with just four healthy receivers for their game Sunday at Cincinnati.
Starter Jordan Matthews was already ruled out after breaking his thumb last weekend.
Mabin’s promotion to the active roster comes with the Bills listing three defensive backs as questionable to play.
Starting cornerback E.J. Gaines is nursing a groin injury, while backup Shareece Wright has a back injury. Staring safety Micah Hyde is dealing with a knee injury.
