Big fourth-down play helps SMU edge UC

Ben Hicks connected with Trey Quinn on a fourthand2­6 pass to keep the SMU drive alive, and Josh Williams kicked a 27- yard field goal to defeat host Cincinnati 31- 28 in overtime on Saturday.

Hicks found All- America wideout Courtland Sutton on a 25- yard scoring strike to give the Mustangs ( 5- 2, 2- 1 American Athletic Conference) a 28- 20 lead with 6: 36 left in the game. Moore then led Cincinnati ( 2- 6, 0- 4) on a 10- play, 78- yard drive, finding Devin Gray for a 21- yard score and again on the two- point conversion pass to tie the score with 2: 22 remaining.

Hicks fumbled on the first play of overtime when he was sacked by Marquis Copeland, but the Mustangs kept possession at the 41. Three plays later, Hicks passed to Quinn for a 28- yard gain and a first down at the 13. Hicks finished 26 of 37 for 295 yards.

OHIO 48, KENT STATE 3: Nathan Rourke threw two touchdowns to Mason Morgan in a 28- point third quarter as Ohio ( 6- 2,

3- 1 Mid- American Conference) raced to victory over Kent State ( 2- 6, 1- 3) in Peden Stadium. Dorian Brown and A. J. Ouellette ran for touchdowns of 39 and 37 yards, respective­ly, in the third quarter before Morgan’s two touchdown catches. Brown led the Bobcats’ 336- yard rushing attack with 108 yards on 13 carries.

TOLEDO 48, AKRON 21: Logan Woodside tossed fi ve touchdown passes as Toledo ran away from visiting Akron ( 4- 4, 3- 1). Woodside fi nished 17 of 24 for 304 yards to lead the Rockets ( 6- 1, 3- 0 MAC). In the process, he moved into second place on Toledo’s all- time passing yardage list with 8,356 yards, behind Bruce Gradkowski’s 9,225.

MIAMI 24, BUFFALO 14: Kenny Young ran 18 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns as Miami University ( 3- 5, 2- 2 MAC) pulled away in the third quarter to beat Buffalo ( 3- 5, 1- 3) in Oxford, Ohio. NORTHERN ILLINOIS 48, BOWLING GREEN 17: Marcus Childers threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns and added 73 yards rushing as visiting Northern Illinois ( 5- 2, 3- 0 MAC) beat Bowling Green ( 1- 7, 1- 3).

OTTERBEIN 37, BALDWIN WALLACE 29: Christian Johnson rushed for 211 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown, and Logan Stepp added 154 yards on 14 carries with a score to lead host Otterbein ( 5- 2, 4- 2 Ohio Athletic Conference) over Baldwin Wallace ( 4- 3, 3- 3). The Cardinals totaled 553 yards, 368 on the ground. JOHN CARROLL 48, CAPITAL 21: John Carroll ( 5- 3, 5- 2 OAC) held Capital to 25 yards rushing en route to a comfortabl­e win in Bexley. Thomas Wibbeler threw for 298 yards and two scores for Capital ( 1- 7, 1- 6).

DENISON 31, OHIO WESLEYAN 20: Alex Minton rushed for 152 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown to help Denison ( 4- 4, 3- 3 North Coast Athletic Conference) rally from a 20- 7 third- quarter defi cit and beat host Ohio Wesleyan ( 3- 4, 3- 3). OHIO DOMINICAN 53, ALDERSONBR­OADDUS 13: The Panthers

( 4- 3, 4- 0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) put up 35 points in the second quarter on their way to a rout of the Battlers ( 2- 6, 1- 3) in Philippi, W. Va. EJ Colson ran for 153 yards and four touchdowns and Grant Russell threw for two scores for Ohio Dominican.

NORTHERN IOWA 19, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 14: Marcus Weymiller ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and Northern Iowa ( 4- 3, 3- 1 Missouri Valley Conference) held off Youngstown State

( 3- 4, 1- 3) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. DAYTON 48, DAVIDSON 22: Tucker Yinger ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and Dayton ( 3- 5, 2- 3 Pioneer League) scored 27 third- quarter points to pull away from host Davidson ( 2- 5, 0- 4).
