A slain man’s family is hoping that a reward will help Reynoldsburg police detectives catch his killer.

Just before 1:30 a.m. April 22, officers heard the popping sound of gunshots nearby and responded to find James W. Stennies Jr., 59, on the ground at the Miracle Car Wash on Lancaster Avenue with a gunshot wound to his chest. Investigators believe he might have tried to run.

Stennies, who worked overnight for one of his two jobs, was going to wash his car before driving to Indiana to attend a funeral.

His family is offering a $10,000 reward and his case is being featured as part of Central Ohio Crime Stoppers’ Crime of the Week in hopes that someone will come forward.

In a previous interview with The Dispatch, Stennies’ younger sister, Gail, said her brother was creative and enjoyed learning.

He earned a degree at Ohio University in visual communications a few years ago, she said. Before his death, he was working toward a degree in logistics and supply management.

“He was well-educated and well-read. I’ll miss conversations with him,” she said.

Police have had a hard time determining a motive in Stennies’ death.

His wallet, cellphone and keys were not taken. His car, a blue 2001 Volvo, was found parked in the bay area of the carwash. No one called about the shooting that morning to report it.

The reward is being offered to anyone who might have information leading to the arrest or indictment of the Stennies’ killer. Tipsters remain anonymous.

Anyone with information can call 614-461-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online at stopcrime.org. You can also submit tips by downloading a free application called P3 Tips on your phone.
