Insurer Root expands to 4 more states
COLUMBUS — Startup autoinsurer Root has expanded service to drivers in Illinois, Utah, Oklahoma and Indiana.
Root can cut insurance premiums by up to 52 percent through its data-driven approach to setting rates based on individual driving behavior. Most insurers use data such as age, credit score and the ZIP code where a driver lives to set rates. The Columbus-based company argues that good drivers are forced to pay more than they deserve under traditional ways of setting rates.
To join Root, customers download Root’s smartphone app and drive for two to three weeks. The app measures acceleration, braking, turns and mileage.
Good drivers then receive a quote and manage their policy through Root’s app.
With the expansion, Root insurance is now available to drivers in six states, including Ohio. 23 full-time job offers and 39 extended internships.

The app is available free on the App Store and Google Play. of small, commercial-grade drones.
Several hundred units have been sold to the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security, Battelle reports.
