Patriots overwhelm Falcons in rematch

-

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes, and the New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-7 in a fog-filled Super Bowl rematch Sunday night.

New England scored the final 31 points to win the NFL championship in February. Placards and shirts reading 28-3 were ever-present in and around Gillette Stadium as the Patriots scored the first 23 points in the mismatch. The Falcons, who led New England by that 25-point margin in the third quarter of the Super Bowl before folding, were outplayed throughout this one.

While Atlanta looked tentative, if not intimidated, Brady and his offense clinically tore apart the Falcons. Mixing runs and passes, New England controlled the clock and field position. And its defense, ranked at the bottom of the league through six weeks, stymied the NFL's fifth-ranked offense.

Jared Goff ran for a touchdown and threw for another, and Greg Zuerlein made four field goals to lead Los Angeles over Arizona in London. Arizona heads home with significant questions after quarterback Carson Palmer broke his left arm in the second quarter. He will need surgery and is expected to miss eight weeks. Ezekiel Elliott gained 219 yards from scrimmage and tied a career high with three touchdowns just days after a legal reprieve put his suspension on hold for visiting Dallas. Matt Moore replaced an injured Jay Cutler and threw two touchdown passes in the final 12 minutes, and host Miami pulled off another comeback win by erasing a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

Rookie safety Eddie Jackson became the first NFL player to score multiple defensive touchdowns of 75 yards or more in a game. Jackson ran back a fumble recovery 75 yards and returned an interception of Cam Newton 76 yards for a score to give host Chicago a 14-0 lead.

Russell Wilson threw three second-half touchdown passes, and host Seattle limited New York's receiver-depleted offense to 177 yards. Buffalo rookie cornerback Tre’Davious White forced and recovered a fumble to set up Stephen Hauschka’s 30-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining for host Buffalo.

Los Angeles played a dominant defensive game to record the first home victory of their relocation season.
