Tyack easily wins 3rd term
Lori M. Tyack won a third term as clerk of Franklin County Municipal Court on Tuesday in a landslide over a political newcomer. Tyack received 80 percent of the vote to 20 percent for Aaron Schlabach.
“I’m overwhelmed,” she said. “I am so pleased that the voters continue to have confidence in the job I’m doing.”
Tyack, a 54-year-old Democrat, has served as clerk for nearly 12 years, overseeing an office with more than 160 employees and an annual budget of $12.1 million. She won another six-year term at an annual salary of $94,090.
The clerk’s office is responsible for maintaining the records of all cases filed in Municipal Court and collects and distributes about $40 million in court costs and fines a year.
Tyack, of the Northeast Side, stressed her experience during the campaign. She was a paralegal who worked for private law firms and as a bailiff in Common Pleas Court before winning her first term as Municipal Court clerk in 2005.
Schlabach, a 25-year-old Republican from the Far West Side, works as a baker at the Blackwell Inn at Ohio State University. He campaigned on his ability to bring “a fresh perspective and youthful energy” to the office.
He criticized Tyack for being slow in adopting a system of electronic filing for all documents, which also was an issue in her last campaign.
Tyack said her office has made progress in establishing the technology, known as e-filing, for civil cases and traffic tickets and expects “to be fully functioning with e-filing within the next two years ... long before the next election.”
