Rogers retires from LA Galaxy

Robbie Rogers, the LA Galaxy defender who became the first openly gay male athlete in a major North American profession­al sport, is retiring from soccer.

Rogers is a 10-year MLS veteran, playing for Crew SC from 2007 to 2011, and two-time All-Star who won league championsh­ips in 2008 and 2014.

Rogers came out while announcing his retirement in 2013 after being released by the English club Leeds. That retirement lasted less than three months before he signed with the Galaxy. Nov. 14 exhibition at Portugal.

Defender Matt Miazga, midfielder Lynden Gooch and goalkeeper­s Ethan Horvath and Bill Hamid also are part of a young 21-man roster announced by interim coach Dave Sarachan. Half the players are 24 and under.

Christian Pulisic is being given the game off.

European champion Portugal will be without FIFA Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo for the game.

She is joined by Connecticu­t’s Gabby Williams, Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier, marking the first time a school has had three players on the team.

The fifth member is South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson, who was a unanimous choice by the 32-member national media panel that selects the weekly poll.

The assistant coaches charged are Chuck Person of Auburn, Emanuel Richardson of Arizona, Tony Bland of Southern California and Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State.
