Hurricanes snap skid with win vs. Panthers

RALEIGH, N.C. — Derek Ryan scored the go-ahead goal at 9:35 of the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Tuesday night to snap a fourgame losing streak.

Brock McGinn also scored, Justin Williams added an empty-netter and rookie Roland McKeown had his first two assists for the Hurricanes, who went 1-4-2 in their previous seven games while slipping into last place in the Metropolit­an Division.

Vincent Trocheck scored for the Panthers, who are 0-3-2 in their last five games, and Roberto Luongo made 45 saves in his second game back from a hand injury.

Scott Darling stopped 30 shots for Carolina.

Ryan’s go-ahead goal came off a draw, with Luongo deflecting Williams’ long-range shot high. Ryan batted it out of the air and into the net for his third goal.

The Hurricanes entered with one of the NHL’s worst offenses, ranking 30th in the league with 31 goals and 27th with a 2.58 scoring average.

SABRES 3, CAPITALS 1:

Benoit Pouliot scored the go-ahead goal on and end-to-end rush 3:22 into the third period, and Buffalo beat Washington at home. Alex Ovechkin scored his 13th of the season for the Capitals.

BLUES 3, DEVILS 1:

Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz scored in a 1:35 span bridging the second and third periods to help St. Louis beat New Jersey on the road.

OILERS 2, ISLANDERS 1, OT:

Connor McDavid scored 38 seconds into overtime to lead Edmonton over New York on the road. Leon Draisaitl also scored for Edmonton, and Cam Talbot made 36 saves.

PENGUINS 3, COYOTES 1:

Justin Schultz scored in his return from a concussion, Matt Murray stopped 24 shots and Pittsburgh had little trouble with Arizona at home. Evgeni Malkin scored his team-high seventh goal for the Penguins and added two assists. Phil Kessel also had a goal and two assists.

CANADIENS 3, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2:

Brendan Gallagher and Jordie Benn scored in the first period and Montreal held off Vegas at home.

DUCKS’ GETZLAF HAS SURGERY:

Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf will be sidelined up to two months after surgery for a broken cheekbone.
