Big Walnut rallies, makes state fi nal

With Big Walnut down two sets to none and trailing 20-14 in the third, the Eagles went on a 14-6 run to take the third set on their way to a victory over Kettering Alter on Friday night in a Division II state semifinal volleyball match at Wright State's Nutter Center.

The Eagles (25-3), who lost sets one and two to Alter (21-7) 25-22 and 25-19, took the third 28-26, followed by 25-23 and 15-9 wins in the final two sets. After the nip-and-tuck fourth set, the Eagles, led by Machaela Podraza's 17 kills and 24 points, jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the final set, courtesy of three kills by Kaley Rammelsber­g, who finished with 15 kills and 20 points.

Emma Urhammer's clinching kill, on an assist from Podraza, sent Big Walnut to the final, to be played against Parma Padua Franciscan (24-4) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

In Division III, Coldwater (28-1) will face Versailles (23-6) in the championsh­ip game at 3 p.m.

Girls soccer

The top seeded teams remaining in all three divisions delivered shutout victories in Friday's state championsh­ip matches. No. 1 Cincinnati Summit Country Day (22-1) downed ninth-seeded Kirtland (15-5-3) 4-0 on a pair of goals each for Ravin Alexander and Colleen McIlvenna in the Division I final. Top-seeded Cincinnati Indian Hill (22-0-1) blanked Mentor Lake Catholic (18-4-1) 2-0 on goals by Morgan Jackson and Anna Podojil in the DII final. And in Division III, Brooke Harden scored the game's lone goal as No. 2 Loveland (22-1) defeated No. 7 Perrysburg (17-3-3).
