Women’s, men’s soccer teams ousted in tournament­s

Stephanie Amack headed in the winning goal off a corner kick with 1:07 left as Vanderbilt ended Ohio State’s season with a 2-1 victory in an NCAA tournament first-round game on Friday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Sarah Roberts took a through ball from Maddy Lowe and scored past Vandy goalkeeper Kaitlyn Fahrner from 10 yards in the 30th minute to put 14thranked Ohio State (15-5-1) ahead 1-0. The Buckeyes had been 15-0 when scoring first this season.

Nia Dorsey had the equalizing goal in the 62nd minute for the Commodores (13-6-2).

Men’s soccer

Ohio State kept it close with undefeated and top-ranked Indiana through one half, but the Hoosiers unleashed three goals in the second on the way to a 4-0 victory in a Big Ten semifinal at Westfield, Ind.

Andrew Gutman scored 1:48 into the second half for a 2-0 lead for Indiana (150-4). Gutman also assisted on Indiana’s first goal, by Cory Thomas at 16:51.

Parker Siegfried made five saves for OSU (8-10-1), which was limited to just three shots on goal.

Men’s hockey

Matthew Weis had two early goals and added an assist, and Ohio State jumped to a 3-0 lead and held off host Connecticu­t 5-4 in a nonconfere­nce game in Hartford.

Weis put the 17thranked Buckeyes (6-3-2) ahead with a goal just 40 seconds into the game, and he added another at 7:57 of the first. Dakota Joshua scored a powerplay goal at 4:13 of the second period to make it 3-0.

The Huskies (3-81) scored twice in the second to make it a one-goal game heading into the final period. Mason Jobst (3:58) and Christian Lampasso (7:37) tallied in the third as UConn twice cut the lead to one but never got the equalizer against Buckeyes goaltender Tommy Nappier, who had 35 saves.

Jesse Schwartz scored two goals for the Huskies, and Tanner Creel and Adam Huska combined for 16 saves. Creel gave up all five goals to OSU, which was outshot 39-21.

Women's hockey

Maddy Field scored with just over five minutes remaining and No. 5 Ohio State (8-2-1, 6-2-1) escaped with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota State (2-8-1, 1-5-0) in a Western Collegiate Hockey Associatio­n game at the OSU Ice Rink.

The Buckeyes fired 42 shots on goal, to Minnesota State's 13, but was held scoreless until Lauren Spring tied the game at 1 with 2:11 left in the second period.

Cross country

Christine Frederick's 6-kilometer time of 20 minutes, 53.3 seconds (a 5:36 pace) helped the Buckeyes to a seventh-place finish at the women's NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional at Terre Haute, Ind. Frederick placed 10th among individual­s out of 223 total runners and was named to the All-Great Lakes Region team. The Buckeyes finished with 189 points. Michigan won the regional title with 71 points.

Jake Mandel led the men's team with a 10k time of 32:04.2, good for 46th place, as the men placed 15th overall with 398 points. Michigan State took top honors with 68.
