Indiana blown out at home in opener
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Brenton Scott scored 24 points and Indiana State made 17 3-pointers to blow out Indiana 90-69 Friday night in Archie Miller’s first regular-season game as coach of the Hoosiers.
It was a stunning twist in score and style.
Indiana State (1-0) dominated the game in every way, shooting 57 percent from the field and making an astounding 17 of 26 3s to break the Assembly Hall record for an opponent. The previous mark, of 14, was set by UNCG on Nov. 28, 2014.
The numbers made the result predictable.
Indiana (0-1) was led by De’Ron Davis with 14 points and Juwan Morgan with 13. Miles Bridges started his sophomore season strong with 20 points and 10 rebounds, helping Michigan State (1-0) beat North Florida (0-1) in a tuneup for a highly anticipated game. The Spartans will play No. 1 Duke on Tuesday night in Chicago. Tyler Davis had 23 points and 13 rebounds, Admon Gilder scored 23 points and Texas A&M (1-0) overcame a sluggish start to dominate West Virginia (0-1) in the Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Cane Broome scored 17 points during his debut as Cincinnati’s point guard, and the Bearcats (1-0) pulled away to a victory over Savannah State (0-1).
Jordan Murphy scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, Reggie Lynch added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Minnesota (1-0) overpowered South Carolina Upstate (0-1) in the season opener.
Trevon Bluiett scored 21 of his 25 points during Xavier’s blistering first half, and the Musketeers (1-0) dominated from the opening tip-off for a victory over Morehead State (0-1). Lindsey scored 26 points, Derek Pardon added 16 and Northwestern held off Loyola (Md.) (0-1). Northwestern (1-0) won despite blowing a 17-point lead in the second half.
The Boilermakers (1-0) got 15 first-half points from Dakota Mathias and ran away to a season-opening victory over Southern Illinois-Edwarsville (0-1).
Josh Cunningham caught a lob from Xeyrius Williams and laid it in with one second left, and Dayton (1-0) opened the Anthony Grant era with a win over Ball State (0-1) in the season opener for both teams.
Freshman Jalen Adaway scored 15 points with 14 rebounds and Miami (1-0) finished on a 7-0 run to defeat Fordham (0-1), giving new coach Jack Owens his fi rst win.
