The Columbus company Borror plans a six-story apartment and commercial building next to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Downtown’s blossoming Discovery District.

The building would include 222 apartments above ground-floor retail and offices on the former site of the Ohio Democratic Party and the O.R. Woodyard company on East State Street.

“We are excited about this foray into a new, exciting and growing part of our city,” said Borror President Lori Steiner in a news release.

“Being next to Grant Medical Center and surrounded by a number of large offices makes this the perfect location to offer brand new apartments with great amenities.”

Borror plans to present the proposal to the Columbus Downtown Development Commission next week, with the hope of breaking ground in September.

Plans call for the apartment lobby, a restaurant and other commercial space to be on the ground floor fronting State Street, with parking on the first and basement levels.

The complex also would include a pool, a workout facility and balconies. About half of the apartments would be studios, 35 percent onebedrooms and 15 percent two-bedrooms. Rents have not been set.

The Borror project is the latest of several developments underway or announced in the area, which has been dominated by the hospital, Franklin University, Capital University Law School and the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s main site.

New projects include a string of town houses near Topiary Park, a nine-story apartment building on Oak Street and an extended-stay hotel on East Main Street.
