Bearcats pull away from Coppin State

Jarron Cumberland led Cincinnati’s opening blitz of 13 made shots, and the 12th-ranked Bearcats pulled away to a 97-54 victory over Coppin State on Thursday night.

The Bearcats (3-0) piled up 107 and 102 points while beating Savannah State and Western Carolina, and were trying to reach triple digits in three straight games for the first time in school history. They came up short, failing to make a field goal in the final 4 minutes.

They made quick work of the Eagles (0-3), who have yet to score more than 54 points in a game. Cincinnati made its first 13 shots — five from beyond the arc — while racing ahead 35-13. Cumberland had 12 of his 17 points in the Bearcats’ perfect opening spurt.

Karonn Davis scored 10 points for Coppin State, which is playing three road games in four days. points and eight assists.

Elijah Thomas had career highs with 17 points and 15 rebounds, and the Tigers’ defense took control in the second half of a victory over the Bobcats Ohio at the Charleston Classic in Charleston, South Carolina. Donte Graham added 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Clemson (3-0). Gavin Block led Ohio (1-1) with a careerhigh 22 points including a career best six 3-pointers.

Women

Lindsey Spann made six of seven 3-pointers and scored 20 points and the Gamecocks (3-0) beat the Tigers (2-1) in Clemson, South Carolina. A’ja Wilson scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds for South Carolina.

Ruthy Hebard scored a seasonhigh 24 points on 10-for-10 shooting and the Ducks (3-0) beat Texas A&M (2-1) in College Station, Texas.

Sophie Cunningham scored 19 points, including two free throws with 1.4 seconds left, to cap host Missouri’s fourthquar­ter rally. The Tigers (2-1) used a 14-5 run to erase a nine-point deficit with 3:50 left. Chelsea Welch scored a careerhigh 36 points for Wright State (2-1).
