Freshman phenom leads Duke past Texas

PORTLAND, Ore. — Freshman Marvin Bagley III had a career-high 34 points and added 15 rebounds, and No. 1 Duke rallied to defeat Texas 85-78 in overtime on Friday in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitation­al.

Gary Trent Jr. added 17 points for the Blue Devils (7-0), who trailed by 16 points in the second half and were forced to play five freshmen once senior Grayson Allen fouled out.

Duke advanced to play the winner of Friday night’s late game between No. 7 Florida and No. 17 Gonzaga for the title on Sunday.

Dylan Osetkowski had 19 points and seven rebounds for Texas (4-1), which fell short of its first-ever victory over a top-ranked team. their third straight loss at the Battle for Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Udoka Azubuike had a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, seven players hit double-figures scoring and the Jayhawks (5-0) rolled over the Golden Grizzlies (2-3) in Lawrence, Kansas.

Mikal Bridges scored 18 points as the Wildcats (6-0) pulled away down the stretch to beat Northern Iowa (5-2) in the Battle 4 Atlantis championsh­ip game in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Jalen Brunson added 16 points as Villanova led most of the way, then used an 8-0 run in the final 4 minutes to turn away the Panthers.

Luke Maye had career-highs with 28 points and 16 rebounds, Kenny Williams had 16 of his 19 points in the second half, and the Tar Heels (5-0) slowed down the high-scoring Razorbacks (4-1) in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitation­al in Portland, Oregon. The Tar Heels were smothering on the defensive end, holding the Razorbacks under 80 points for the first time this season.

Jordan Murphy scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to spark the Golden Gophers (6-0) to a rout of Massachuse­tts (3-2) in the first game of the Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn, New York.

Tra Holder scored a career-high 40 points to lead the Sun Devils (6-0) to an upset of the Musketeers (5-1) in the championsh­ip game of the Las Vegas Invitation­al. J.P. Macura led Xavier with 23 points.

James Bolden scored 17 points, Jevon Carter had 16 and the Mountainee­rs (5-1) routed the Knights in a semifinal at the Advocare Invitation­al in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Deshawn Freeman had his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds and the Scarlet Knights (6-0) Rutgers beat the Pirates (2-3) in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Nazeer Bostick and Jamari Wheeler scored 14 points apiece and the Nittany Lions (6-1) beat the Golden Eagles (1-5) in University Park, Pennsylvan­ia.

Robert Johnson scored 18 points, Josh Newkirk added 17 and the Hoosiers (4-2) won their third straight with a victory over the Eagles (4-1) in Bloomingto­n, Indiana.

Mike Laster and Teyvion Kirk each scored 20 points and the Bobcats (3-2) cruised past the Mountainee­rs (2-4) in Athens, Ohio.

Michael Finke scored 22 points and teammate Aaron Jordan added 16 to lead the Fighting Illini (6-0) over the Eagles (2-5) in Champaign, Illinois.
