Minnesota edges short-handed Alabama

NEW YORK — Nate Mason scored 20 points to lead No. 14 Minnesota to an 89-84 victory over No. 25 Alabama, which finished the game with just three players, in the championsh­ip game of the Barclays Center Classic on Saturday.

Jordan Murphy scored 19 points and and grabbed 14 rebounds for Minnesota (7-0) while Isaiah Washington added 14 and Amir Coffey finished with 12.

Collin Sexton had 40 points for the Crimson Tide (4-1).

The game was marred by a near brawl involving Minnesota’s Dupree McBrayer and Alabama’s Dazon Ingram in front of the Crimson Tide bench 6:21 into the second half. Just 27 seconds earlier, Minnesota’s Mason and Sexton were each assessed technical fouls after a confrontat­ion, and the Golden Gophers senior guard was ejected.

During the fracas, Alabama players Donta Hall, Alex Reese, Daniel Giddens, Avery Johnson Jr. and Herbert Jones came off the bench and were ejected. Ingram, who had four fouls at the time of the scuffle, fouled out.

Nearly 3 minutes after the McBrayer-Ingram incident, Alabama lost John Petty to a leg injury, and the Crimson Tide ended the game playing just three players.

NO. 11 MIAMI 86, NORTH FLORIDA 65: Bruce Brown and Anthony Lawrence scored 14 points each to lead host Miami (5-0) over North Florida (1-7). Brown scored six points in a 16-2 run that helped Miami build a 17-point lead midway through the first half. Brown’s dunk with 7:04 remaining capped the surge and gave the Hurricanes a 26-9 lead.

DAYTON 73, AKRON 60: Josh Cunningham had 20 points and 16 rebounds as host Dayton (3-2) upended Akron (2-1). Dayton had runs of 13-0 and 16-5 in the second half to take control after trailing 37-32 at halftime.

MARYLAND 80, NEW MEXICO 65: Anthony Cowan scored 21 points to pace Maryland as the Terps (5-1) topped New Mexico (2-4) in the Emerald Coast Classic consolatio­n game in Niceville, Florida.

LOYOLA-CHICAGO 75, KENT STATE 60: Donte Ingram scored 18 points as LoyolaChic­ago (7-0) beat Kent State (3-3) in the Savannah Invitation­al in Savannah, Georgia.

BOWLING GREEN 78, CAMPBELL 72: Rodrick Caldwell scored seven of his 20 points in the final minutes to keep host Campbell (2-4) at bay as Bowling Green (5-1) held on to win in the Creek Classic.

WESTERN MICHIGAN 88, NORTHWOOD 59: Thomas Wilder scored 15 points and Drake LaMont had 14 points shooting 7 of 9 and host Western Michigan (3-3) beat Division II Northwood (2-3).

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPP­I 71, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 64: Kevin Holland nailed five shots from beyond the arc for 17 points as Southern Mississipp­i (3-3) held on to defeat Youngstown State (2-4) in the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

WRIGHT STATE 68, JACKSONVIL­LE 44: Grant Benzinger scored 16 points and Mark Hughes added 14 points and host Wright State (3-3) beat Jacksonvil­le (2-4) in the Wright State Tournament.
