Open seat draws 36 applicants

- By Rick Rouan

The Columbus City Council has a pool of applicants from which it will choose its next member.

The seat that will open when Council President Zach

Klein is sworn in as the next city attorney in January drew 36 applicants.

Voters selected Klein as the next city attorney during the November election, but he still has two years left on his council term. The six other council members will select someone to finish the term.

Several City Hall sources have said Emmanuel Remy, a real estate agent and president of the Northland Community Council, and Rob Dorans, the attorney for Affiliated Construction Trades Foundation of Ohio and a parks commissioner, are the frontrunners for the seat.

They will compete with several other applicants who are well-known around City Hall. Stefanie Lynn Coe is a Southwest Area Commission member and was the chairwoman of a charter review committee that recommended expanding the council earlier this year. Mike Rankin, a former Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles deputy registrar, applied. Jasmine Ayres finished in fourth place in the November election for three council seats.

Council members will review the applications, with each member selecting three finalists by Dec. 15. The Council will interview all of the finalists in an executive session Dec. 18. The council will meet Jan. 8 to appoint the new member.

All of the sitting council members are Democrats. Advocates for changes to the council have said it should eliminate appointments because they create an unfair advantage for the incumbent in the following election. The other applicants are:
