Michigan’s fast start knocks off Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Freshman Jordan Poole scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half, and Michigan’s fast start was too much for Indiana to overcome in the Wolverines’ 69-55 victory Saturday.

Michigan (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten) scored its first 12 points on threepoint­ers and led 16-2 early on. It was 34-21 at halftime, and although Indiana (4-4, 0-1) cut the deficit to five in the second half, the Wolverines responded with a quick 8-0 run.

Charles Matthews, who came into the game as Michigan’s leading scorer, played only two minutes in the first half because of foul trouble. Instead, it was freshmen Poole, Isaiah Livers and Eli Brooks who led the way.

Poole hit a pair of three-pointers during Michigan’s initial run, and Livers made his only two shot attempts of the half. Brooks had four assists in the first half.

73: Lamar Stevens scored 22 points, Mike Watkins added 19 and Penn State (7-2, 1-0) held off Iowa (4-4, 0-1), snapping a 12-game road losing streak against the Hawkeyes.

OHIO WESLEYAN 105, DEPAUW 71: Nate Axelrod scored 29 points and Seth Clark had 20 for Ohio Wesleyan (5-1, 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference), which made 23 three-pointers in a rout of DePauw (2-3, 0-1). DENISON 84, KENYON 83, 3OT: Garrett Collier made two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in the third overtime and Denison (5-1, 2-0 NCAC) beat host Kenyon (3-2, 0-1). Kenyon’s Phillip Crampton missed a three-point attempt and Denison’s Matt Doyle rebounded with 4 seconds left to seal the win.

OHIO DOMINICAN 97, OHIO VALLEY 82: Ronnie Williams scored 25 points, Hasan Varence had 17 points and eight rebounds and Ohio Dominican (5-2, 1-0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) defeated host Ohio Valley (1-3, 0-1).

OHIO NORTHERN 86, CAPITAL 84: Nate Burger had 23 points and eight assists to lead Ohio Northern (3-2, 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) past host Capital (2-4, 0-1). Joey Weingartne­r led Capital with 27 points.

HEIDELBERG 99, OTTERBEIN 85: Host Heidelberg (3-2, 1-0 OAC) shot 60 percent from the field and cruised past Otterbein (0-7, 0-2). Justin Carter scored 23 points to lead Otterbein.
