Young powers Oklahoma to rout of Northweste­rn

NORMAN, Okla. — One game after tying an NCAA record with 22 assists, freshman guard Trae Young had 31 points and 12 assists to fuel No. 17 Oklahoma past Northweste­rn 104-78 on Friday night.

Young, the nation’s leader in scoring and assists, made 9 of 16 shots, including 8 of 13 three-point attempts. Christian James matched a career high with 19 points for the Sooners (10-1), who won their eighth straight since losing to Arkansas on Nov. 23.

Young hit a deep three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to give the Sooners a 68-38 lead. He had 25 points and 10 assists before the break.

Dererk Pardon had 17 points and nine rebounds for Northweste­rn (9-5). scored 15 points and visiting Xavier (12-1) hung on to beat Northern Iowa (8-4). Trevon Bluiett scored 12 points with seven rebounds for the Musketeers, who went on an 11-2 run down the stretch, highlighte­d by a three-pointer by Bluiett, to break open a tie game. Macura’s breakaway dunk and three-pointer in the final 95 seconds left sealed it for Xavier. Bennett Koch had 26 points for the Panthers.

Alex Robinson scored a season-high 23 points and host TCU (12-0) set a school record with its 17th consecutiv­e win dating to last season when it won the postseason NIT, beating William & Mary (7-4). Frederick Scott scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and made a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Rider (6-5) over host Penn State (10-4) as the Broncs overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 14 minutes. Scott scored seven straight points in a 1:57 span to cut Penn State’s lead to 65-64 with four minutes to play. Josh Reaves scored 10 points, grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds and had eight assists for the Nittany Lions, and Shep Garner added 18 points on six three-pointers.

Jakub Petras hit a jumper from the right elbow with .02 seconds left in overtime to give visiting Stony Brook (5-8) the upset over Rutgers (10-4). Akwasi Yeboah scored 21 points and Jaron Cornish had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Stony Brook. Deshawn Freeman scored 18 points to lead Rutgers. Isaiah Moss and Maishe Dailey scored 16 points each, and Iowa (8-6) pulled away late from Colorado (8-4) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. McKinley Wright scored 21 points for the Buffaloes.

Grant Benzinger scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half and guard Justin Mitchell had 15 points and 10 rebounds as visiting Wright State (8-5) rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to down Georgia Tech (5-6). The Raiders uncorked a 35-15 run to start the second half to take control. Jose Alvarado paced the Yellow Jackets with a career-high 23 points.

Elijah Stewart scored 20 points and Southern California (7-4) rallied after trailing by nine in the first half to defeat Akron (6-3) in a first-round game of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The Trojans emerged from the break and went on a 20-5 run. Jaden Sayles led the Zips with 12 points.

Women

Katie-Lou Samuelson scored a season-high 33 points, Kia Nurse had 24 and Connecticu­t (10-0) posted its biggest victory of the season, routing Duquesne (10-3) in Toronto. Nurse, a senior forward from nearby Hamilton, Ontario, made 9 of 11 shots. Samuelson made 8 of 9 three-point attempts, including seven straight in the second and third quarters.
