Commissioners pulled a fast one

-

The one-party system is on full display by the Franklin County commissioners, who failed to keep their promise they made with a “temporary” sales tax increase. At a time that Congress is trying reduce some amount of tax paid, these commissioners decide that the temporary tax should become permanent.

This tax on a daily basis disproportionately affects people at lower-income levels, as well as seniors on fixed incomes. The millions generated from retaining this tax will be utilized by the same group of people who overpaid for the ballpark, and probably will overpay for the jail construction, but would not give the sheriff additional staff and budget increases he needed to keep the county safe.

The timing of their vote during holidays when many are busy, traveling or just generally distracted reduces the window for signaturegathering, so taxpayers could vote on the increase through a referendum, is bordering on deceitful. It’s time for new voices in county government since they have only their welfare at heart. of Christmas, they lowered federal taxes. I’m delighted so many millions of folks in Ohio and beyond will now keep more of the fruit of their labor.

I know that some wish for higher taxes to be placed on their neighbors and fellow citizens. But since we are all free to give more if we wish, it should be clear — taxes are always about compelling others, not ourselves, to contribute.

As Benjamin Franklin observed, “‘In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Inevitable as these two things may be, action to minimize both is a step in a good direction. Grove City
