Shumate helps Newark win holiday tournament

JT Shumate totaled 18 points and eight rebounds to pace Newark over Cincinnati St. Xavier 52-49 in the championsh­ip game of the Newark Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

Shumate made a free throw with two seconds left, then watched Nathan Stockman miss a half-court shot as time expired. Antonio Watson added 13 points for the Wildcats (6-2), who defended their tourney title and gave coach Jeff Quackenbus­h his 300th career victory.

Chase Wolfe had 18 points and Stockman 16 to lead the Bombers (6-3).

LICKING HEIGHTS 78, PAINESVILL­E HARVEY 53: Matthew Dugue led four players in double figures with 22 points, and Licking Heights (5-3) routed Harvey in the consolatio­n game of the Newark Holiday Tournament. The Hornets jumped out to a 26-9 lead after one quarter.

OLENTANGY 70, CATHEDRAL PREP, PA. 57: Sean Marks scored 31 points, and Olentangy (5-4) jumped out to a quick lead in beating Cathedral Prep in the KSA Events Holiday Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. Marks scored 27 of his points from three-point range or the free-throw line. The Braves led 21-7 after one quarter and were never threatened.

REYNOLDSBU­RG 72, SPRUCE CREEK, FLA. 59: Kyria Walker set a school record with eight threepoint­ers and scored 28 points, and Reynoldsbu­rg (9-2) defeated Spruce Creek (7-6) for third place in the Tampa Bay Christmas Tournament. Uju Ezeudu added 21 points and Jalynda Salley, with 10 points, surpassed 1,000 for her career. PICKERINGT­ON CENTRAL 59, MATER DEI, CALIF. 47: Central ran its record to 10-1 by beating Mater Dei in the championsh­ip game of the Diamond State Classic in Wilmington, Delaware. FAIRFIELD CHRISTIAN 50, NEWARK CATHOLIC 41: Celeste Mershimer scored 19 points and added five assists to help Fairfield Christian (8-1) beat Newark Catholic (9-1) in the championsh­ip game of the Newark Catholic Holiday Tournament. Sophia Sterling added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights. Amelia O’Neill topped the Green Wave with 16 points.

DESALES 74, WALNUT RIDGE 52: Emma Burns scored 22 points and DeSales (4-5) knocked down a seasonhigh 15 three-point shots in its nonleague win over visiting Walnut Ridge (1-6). Nevaeh Reaves had a game-high 29 points for the Scots.
