Tiberi’s last day in House will be Jan. 15
Rep. Pat Tiberi’s last day in office will be Jan. 15.
The Genoa Township Republican sent a letter Wednesday to Ohio Gov. John Kasich announcing that he will step down effective 5 p.m. that date, which this year is Martin Luther King Day. Kasich and the secretary of state’s office are expected soon to announce the arrangements for a special election to succeed Tiberi.
“It has been an unimaginable privilege to serve the people of the 12th district of Ohio for the past 17 years,” Tiberi wrote in his letter to Kasich, whom he succeeded in 2000. “Public service is a sacred trust with those we represent, and I hope I have been able to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Tiberi announced in October that he will step down in order to take a job heading the Ohio Business Roundtable. Among those who have announced plans to run for the seat are five Republicans: state Sens. Kevin Bacon of Minerva Park and Troy Balderson of Zanesville; Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien; Marine Brandon Grisez of Worthington; and real estate investor and U.S. Army veteran Jon Halverstadt of Worthington.
Five Democrats — former Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott, Doug Wilson of Mansfield, John Russell of Galena, John Peters of Newark and businessman Ed Albertson of Granville — also have announced their intention to run.
