Macy’s to close downtown Cincinnati store
Macy’s plans to close its Fountain Place store in downtown Cincinnati — the retailer’s home market — at the end of the month.
All stores in the Ohio area remain open except for that store, a Macy’s spokeswoman said in an email Wednesday.
The closing is one of approximately 100 announced in August 2016. Of those stores, 68 closed in 2017, including two central Ohio stores — in Eastland Mall and one of two stores in the Mall at Tuttle Crossing.
Macy’s continues to have stores at Easton Town Center, Polaris Fashion Place and Tuttle.
There was no further word from Macy’s on locations of the approximately 30 remaining stores it intends to close. The company had earlier said it intends to close those stores “over the next few years as leases or operating covenants expire or sale transactions are completed.”
In a statement, the retailer said it “has been reviewing its real estate portfolio across the country to see if there are opportunities to improve the use of our assets. After careful consideration, Macy’s has decided to close the Fountain Place store in Cincinnati.”
Macy’s said that, wherever possible, it would transfer employees at the Fountain Square location to nearby stores. Those it is unable to place in new jobs will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.
Macy’s still has numerous locations in the Cincinnati area, including Macy’s Anderson Town Center, Kenwood Furniture, Kenwood Towne Centre, Northgate Mall and Tri-County Mall.
