“There’s also the idea of, ‘Hey, don’t foul their better shooters,’ ” Holtmann said. “Offensivel­y, the same way is, can you get your better free throw shooters to the free-throw line?”

In that vein, Holtmann said Bates-Diop needs to be better at driving and drawing fouls, while also pointing out that Jae’Sean Tate (50.0 percent this year, 53.8 percent for his career) needs to shoot better. But overall, the Buckeyes feel better about their chances in close games than in the recent past because of their freethrow shooting.

“You see it all the time (where) teams lose games because it comes down to free throws,” Tate said. “In the Big Ten, a lot of these games come down to one or two possession­s or one or two points.”
