Kyrgios beats Harrison to win Brisbane title

BRISBANE, Australia — Nick Kyrgios won an ATP title on home soil for the first time with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ryan Harrison at the Brisbane Internatio­nal on Sunday night.

It was a fourth title for the enigmatic 22-year-old Australian, and his first since 2016.

Harrison had five breakpoint chances in the first set but couldn’t convert, and thirdseede­d Kyrgios bounced back to get the decisive break in the seventh game and took control with a mix of unorthodox shot-making and pure power on his serve.

He closed with his 17th ace. two highly-seeded players to exit the women’s draw in the first round, with fifth-seeded Kristina Mladenovic retiring earlier Sunday from her match while trailing Australian wildcard entry Ellen Perez 6-4, 4-2.

Elena Vesnina beat Lara Arruabarre­na 6-2, 6-2 in a later match.

Julia Gorges also withdrew from the tournament Sunday after winning the ASB Classic final against Caroline Wozniacki in Auckland, New Zealand. with a score of 197.12, edging the Shibutanis’ 196.93.

Hubbell and Donohue should be headed to their first Olympics; a federation committee later Sunday was to decide the three duos headed to South Korea.

Striking in dark evening-wear costumes, Hubbell and Donohue skated to “Across the Sky” in which their lifts were both lovely and sultry for a 118.02 score. They came into the free dance in second place after the short program Friday.
