Backstrom, Ovechkin power Capitals past Blues

WASHINGTON — Nicklas Backstrom scored at 4:17 of overtime and Alex Ovechkin had a power-play goal and an assist to help the Capitals beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Sunday.

The Capitals have won four in a row overall and nine consecutiv­e home games, the longest active streak in the NHL. Since Nov. 22, the Metropolit­an Division leaders are 15-3-2.

The Devils lost a five-round shootout to the Islanders on Sunday afternoon at Barclays Center and are now in an 0-2-3 skid with their next game on Saturday against the visiting Flyers.

Mathieu Perreault scored twice, Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves and Winnipeg beat the San Jose Sharks on Sunday to extend its home winning streak to five games.

Sean Couturier scored the goahead goal in the second period and added an empty-netter to put it away and the Flyers beat the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday for their third straight victory. Forsberg made 32 saves, Nick Schmaltz and Alex DeBrincat scored in the first period. Brendan Gallagher broke a tie midway through the third period, and Carey Price made 34 saves.

Dan Girardi scored and assisted on a goal in the first period before blocking a shot above the shoulders in the second period. Evgeni Malkin got his second goal of the game at 2:51 of overtime to rally the Pittsburgh Penguins to a victory over the Boston Bruins on Sunday night.
