$1M bond set for man in slaying of 11-month-old

TOLEDO — A judge has set a $1 million bond for an Ohio man charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend's 11-month-old son on New Year's Day.

The Blade reports 30-year-old Eric Mathis, of Toledo, appeared in a Toledo courtroom Thursday with a public defender and said he planned to hire his own attorney. Mathis also is charged with child endangerin­g.

A preliminar­y hearing on both charges is set for Tuesday.

The Lucas County coroner's office says Nehemiah Wright died of blunt force trauma injuries to the abdomen. Police won't say how the injuries occurred.

Toledo police responded Monday to a report of a baby found face down in a bathtub. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital. sexually assaulting two female college students in the vehicle he drove for his "Sherman's Safe Ride" taxi service has been jailed following claims he violated terms of his bond.

Sherman Jackson II was taken into custody Wednesday in Butler County.

A judge previously set bond at $65,000 and ordered Jackson not to operate his taxi service. Prosecutor­s said Jackson was reportedly riding in the passenger seat while an employee operated the taxi. Oxford police allege Jackson harassed employees at a gym that terminated his membership.

Jackson was charged with rape and sexual battery after two Miami University students alleged he assaulted them in his vehicle when they used the taxi service.
