How it works
The triple crown of hiking is awarded to individuals who have completed the Appalachian, Continental Divide and Pacific Crest trails, the first three routes designated by Congress as National Scenic Trails.
Combined, the three trails span nearly 8,000 miles across 22 states.
The American Long Distance Hiking Association-West is the only organization to confer the award. Since it was founded in 1993, the volunteer group has presented 334 triple-crown awards.
Honorees, who are expected to follow the honor system when applying online, receive a plaque and a poster during an annual fall ceremony.
Applicants aren’t required to have completed the trails in the year that they applied — a hiker who finished the triple crown 20 years ago, for example, could still apply for the award. There is also no time restriction for completing all three trails — some hikers finish in three years; others might take 10 years or more. (Hikers needn’t complete a trail all in one hike.)
The hiking association, based in Portland, Oregon, doesn’t track the ages, races or nationalities of triple-crown applicants. Daniel H. Pink — The best-selling author of “To Sell is Human” delves into biology, psychology and economics to determine how timing can lead to richer lives.
fiction — “The Immortalists,” Chloe Benjamin; “The Wife Between Us,” Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen; nonfiction — “Single State of Mind,” Andi Dorfman
Bill Skarsgard delivers plenty of frights as the creepy clown Pennywise, based on a 1986 Stephen King novel. A group of terrorized kids in small-town Maine have to band together and figure out how to stop the horror.
