Trump comment insulting, dangerous
Every day seems to bring a new outrageous action or statement by our president. His comments on Thursday about various “s***hole” nations simply follow in a direct line from his campaign rhetoric and actions, and even statements before that.
This is not only embarrassing to us as citizens and insulting to Americans from these national backgrounds, but dangerous to our international relations, engendering passionate rebukes from around the world. Perhaps most disturbing is the acquiescence of leaders of his own party to his behavior.
Where are the statements of rejection from Sen. Rob Portman and congressional representatives? Is their silence a sign that they agree with the president in his portrayal of some of our own citizens, their relatives, and forebears from these nations? We are already facing three more years — can you even imagine it — of this behavior and continued destruction of our nation’s ideals and image in the world.
Perhaps, however, there are constitutional alternatives to being condemned to this immediate future. The situation grows more bleak day by day and our nation’s progress and security continue to become more threatened. Who, in positions of influence, will step forward to reclaim our nation’s heritage and reputation?
