Just one suspect in death of deputy
BRIGHTON, Colo. — Two men who were nearby when a Colorado deputy sheriff was shot and killed were interviewed and released before a suspect in the slaying made his first court appearance Friday.
Adams County Judge Patrick Murphy gave prosecutors until Wednesday to file charges against 22-year-old Dreion Martise Dearing, who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder of a peace officer and second-degree burglary.
Dearing's hands were cuffed in front of him Friday and a chain was wrapped around his waist during his initial court appearance after the killing of 31-year-old Deputy Heath Gumm.
Det. Sgt. Susan Gomes said investigators came to the conclusion after six weeks of investigation but that there are no suspects.
The founder of generic drugmaker Apotex and his wife, Honey, were found dead in their mansion Dec. 15. Police said then the deaths were suspicious but that there were no signs of forced entry and they were not looking for suspects.
Friday, Gomes said the two were found hanging by belts from a railing that surrounds their indoor pool and were in a semi-seated position on the pool deck. through 12 tumultuous years, is stepping down as its president.
