Man slain on South Side; Columbus’ 15th homicide

- By Beth Burger bburger@dispatch.com @ByBethBurger

Columbus police are searching for a man they say shot and killed his friend during an argument early Tuesday morning.

Police have issued a warrant charging 20-year-old Caleb Michael Kazlausky with murder.

Kazlausky shot 29-yearold Chad Edward Dunlap at the South Side residence where the two lived in the 500 block of East Welch Avenue, just east of Parsons Avenue, police said. The home belongs to Dunlap’s mother, according to property records.

Dispatchers received frantic calls beginning at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday from two women reporting the shooting.

When officers arrived, they found Dunlap upstairs with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Dunlap was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:43 a.m.

A woman told homicide detectives she watched as Kazlausky shot Dunlap and then fled.

Police say Kazlausky should be considered “armed and dangerous.” Court records show Kazlausky was convicted last year in Franklin County Common Pleas Court of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle. He was sentenced to three years on community control on basic supervision.

Dunlap’s death is the city’s 15th homicide so far this year. At the same time last year, there had been eight homicides.

About 8:20 p.m. Monday, homicide detectives were called when a woman came home and found a maintenance man at her building bloodied and lying on the ground in the 1900 block of Hamilton Avenue in South Linden, according to a report.

The man, who sustained life-threatening injuries and was the likely victim of an assault, had his truck stolen, investigators said. He was taken for treatment to Grant Medical Center, but the hospital was not releasing information about his condition Tuesday night.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact the homicide unit at 614-645-4730 or leave an anonymous tip with Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477. Melissa and Jim: girl, Jan. 26
