Watson’s layup gives Newark win over Liberty

Antonio Watson hit a driving layup with seven seconds left, giving Newark a 62-60 victory over Olentangy Liberty in a nonleague boys basketball game Tuesday night.

Watson scored a career-high 25 points and JT Shumate added 18 for the Wildcats (17-2), who made 20 of 25 free throws.

Liberty (10-9) had two chances to tie, but Hunter Antritt blocked a shot by Joey Thatcher and, after an inbounds under the basket, Nick Nakasian— who matched Watson with 25 points— missed on a last-second lob attempt.

Qian Magwood scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half and host Walnut Ridge (10-8, 8-5) built a huge lead on the way to upsetting state-ranked City League South Division champion Eastmoor (16-4, 12-1). The Scots hit five three-pointers in a 28-12 third quarter that gave them a 61-39 pad. Justin Vance added 23 points for Walnut Ridge. Taevion Kinsey (25 points) and Randy Olverson (23) paced Eastmoor. pull closer than six in the final period.

Elijah Thomas scored 24 points and host Gahanna (14-6) withstood a late charge by Westervill­e Central (12-7) for a nonleague victory. Tyler Combest had a career-high 34 points for Central, which nearly erased a 14-point deficit in the final period.

Olentangy (9-8) sank 20 of 24 free throws and held off host Hilliard Davidson (10-9) in a nonleague game. Sean Marks had 17 points and Alex Sieve 15 for the Braves. Sieve hit 8 of 9 free throws. Jacob Drees led Davidson with 18 points. win.

Chris Crane hit a pivotal threepoint shot with 3:30 remaining to send Watterson (10-7) on the way to a nonleague victory at Worthingto­n Christian (8-11). Crane's trey pushed the Eagles' lead to four.

Girls

Kiara Beaty hit a big basket in the final minute of overtime and Kobie Burnside made two free throws in the waning seconds as Independen­ce (15-5) topped host Linden (11-7) in nonleague play. Mahogony Loveless led Linden with 17 points.
