No. 1 Notre Dame tops men’s hockey

Jordan Gross scored the tiebreakin­g goal midway through the second period to send top-ranked Notre Dame past No. 6 Ohio State 2-1 and clinch the Big Ten men’s hockey championsh­ip on Friday night in South Bend, Indiana.

The Irish (22-5-2, 16-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on an Andrew Oglevie goal before Kevin Miller equalized for the Buckeyes (18-7-4, 11-7-1) at the 6:52 mark of the second period. John Wiitala and Gordi Myer provided the assists on the Miller goal.

Ohio State outshot Notre Dame 32-29 but was unable to score the tying goal in the third period. Goalie Sean Romeo had 27 saves for the Buckeyes.

Women’s hockey

No. 5 Ohio State was upset 4-1 by host Minnesota State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Associatio­n game. Lindsey Coleman scored twice for the Mavericks (5-23-1, 3-18-0), who led 2-0 after one period. Grace Zarzecki scored the lone goal for the Buckeyes (19-8-4, 12-5-4), who managed 36 shots. Amanda Zeglen made 16 saves for Ohio State and Lisa Bruno and Jincy Dunne each had assists.

Men’s tennis

No. 2 Ohio State outlasted No. 6 Texas A&M 4-3 at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center. The match was decided when Buckeye singles standout Mikael Torpegaard defeated Arthur Rinderknec­h 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2. Ohio State swept all three doubles matches to take the point. A highlight was Torpegaard and Martin Joyce defeating Rinderknec­h and AJ Catanzarit­i 6-2.

Men’s gymnastics

No. 7 Penn State edged No. 8 Ohio State 417.400-414.900 at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes secured their third-best team score of season. Ohio State won four events, two by Alex Yoder on the pommel horse (14.850) and high bar (14.500).

Women’s gymnastics

On the strength of event titles on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise, Ohio State beat Penn State 196.200-196.025 at St. John Arena for its third straight win. Ohio State had seven finishers reach the podium and registered its second-highest total score of the season.
