Animated spinoff from Colbert skit seems excessive

- By David Wiegand

“Our Cartoon President” is too much.

Depending on your political persuasion, the new animated show is likely to be either too much of a good thing or too much of a bad thing.

Stephen Colbert, Matt Lappin, Tim Luecke, R.J. Fried and Chris Licht created “Our Cartoon President” as a bit for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” Now the bit has become a half-hour series on the CBS sister channel Showtime.

The series, set to premiere Sunday, has its moments, but here’s the thing: If you’re a fan of Donald Trump, you’ll hate the show for the way it skewers him and his cronies. If you’re not a fan, it will hit too close to home — with “home” being virtually any news outlet other than Fox News.

To be fair, the show attempts to be nonpartisan or bipartisan, poking fun at Sen. Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats. Trump (voiced by Jeff Bergman), for example, gets off a very pointed and accurate line in the show’s first episode, asking Schumer and Pelosi: “By the way, who’s in charge of your party? Right now, it looks like a flock of seagulls fighting over a potato chip.”

The real Donald Trump — or, as he’s known by much of the country, @RealDonald Trump — probably wouldn’t be that witty. Rather, he would be more likely to stick to summary words such as “sad,” “disgrace” or “disaster.”

The first of the series’ 10 episodes was made available online in advance of the State of the Union address and, in fact, focused on the speech. Because it was shown beforehand, the episode didn’t have the opportunity to poke fun at the typo in advance copies of the speech that heralded “The State of the Uniom” address.

The best part of the episode was Melania having to spend time with Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence.

Actually, the Melania character (voiced by Cody Lindquist) is a consistent show stealer, at least in the two episodes made available to critics.

The second episode finds our president peeved because he has to visit too many disaster sites every week — so he decides to audition Trump impersonators to take his place.

The caricatures in the series are great, the voices pretty good, and the jokes OK.

The only real problem with “Our Cartoon President” is that half the country doesn’t need it and the other half doesn’t want it.

Besides that ...
