Elliott’s three wins pace UA to girls district title

Dakota Elliott won three medals as Upper Arlington edged runner-up New Albany 274-267 to capture its 19th consecutiv­e Division I district girls swimming and diving championsh­ip Saturday at Ohio University.

Elliott broke her own meet record in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 5 one-hundrenths of a second), won the 500 free (4:52.82) and swam on the victorious 400 free relay (3:27.45).

Olivia Schmelzer of Lancaster won the 50 free (23.46) and 100 free (50.94). Janessa Mathews of Westervill­e North set a meet record in winning the 100 breastroke (1:01.89).

Dublin Jerome came away with the program’s first boys title. The Celtics amassed 303 points to outscore runner-up St. Charles (285).

Jerome racked up its points by winning the 200 free relay in a meet-record 1:23.49 as well as the 400 free relay. Grant Cicci, Westin Fishel and Max Scott swam on both relays. Scott added a second in the 50 free (21.16). James Reno took second in the 200 IM (1:54.61).

Eddie Michael of Dublin Coffman took home victories in the 50 free (20.90) and 100 free (45.39).

Jason Mathews of Westervill­e North broke his own meet record in the 100 breaststro­ke (54.88) and added a win in the 200 IM (1:51.63).

The state finals will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
