‘Pacific Overtures’ to have area debut

CATCO will offer musicals and plays during its 33rd season, including the Columbus premiere of a classic Stephen Sondheim musical.

CATCO Is Kids, meanwhile, will fill its youth-oriented season with condensed musicals and shorter works.

“Collaborat­ion with other artists and arts groups continues to define CATCO,” said Steven C. Anderson, CATCO’s producing director, referring to upcoming co-production­s with Evolution Theatre Company and the Columbus School for Girls.

■ Sept. 7-16, Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St. — “Eubie!” the Broadway musical revue, timed to central Ohio’s celebratio­n of the Harlem Renaissanc­e, highlighti­ng “Shuffle Along,” “Hot Feet,” “I’m Just Wild About Harry” and other songs of jazz/ swing musician Eubie Blake

■ Oct. 24 to Nov. 18, Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave.

■ Nov. 28 to Dec. 16, CPAC — “The Christmas Schooner,” musical coproduced with CATCO is Kids, focusing on risky efforts by the crew of a Great Lakes ship to bring the holiday spirit to homesick German immigrants in late-19thcentur­y Chicago

■ Jan. 23 to Feb. 10, (location to be announced) — “Every Brilliant Thing,” a drama, by Duncan Macmillan with Johnny Donahoe, about a son’s uplifting response to his mother’s depression

■ March 20 to April 7, 2019, Riffe Center’s Studio One Theatre, 77 S. High St. — “Life Sucks.,” Aaron Posner’s loose contempora­ry adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic 1898 play “Uncle Vanya,” about a group of people exploring life’s most perplexing questions

■ May 29 to June 16, 2019, CPAC — “Pacific Overtures,” Columbus premiere of Sondheim and author John Weidman’s 1976 Broadway musical about Japan’s opening to the West in 1853

Youth season

Except as noted, CATCO is Kids shows will be performed at the Columbus Performing Arts Center.

■ Aug. 17-19, Lincoln Theatre — “Madagascar — A Musical Adventure Jr.,” the musical based on the DreamWorks animated film about Central Park Zoo animals stranded on the island near Africa

■ Nov. 10-11 — “Lion King KIDS,” a 30-minute condensati­on for young theater-goers of the long-running Broadway musical about the rites of passage of a lion cub in Africa

■ Jan. 11-20 —“Sunshine,” regional premiere of the musical adapted from Ludwig Bemelmans’ book about a grumpy landlord whose daily routine is upset by a tenant/ music teacher and her students

■ March 1-10, 2019 — “Babe, The Sheep Pig,” David Wood’s adventure drama adapted from Dick King-Smith’s book about a charming piglet who herds sheep

■ March 23-24, 2019

■ May 3-12, 2019, 65 S. Drexel Ave. — “Haroun and the Sea of Stories,” coproduced with Columbus School for Girls, an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s book about a boy’s adventure/quest to help his story-telling father
