By the numbers
■ Oldest 2017 nominee: At 88, Christopher Plummer is the oldest acting nominee this year and ever — 17 years older than the next oldest this year, Richard Jenkins.
■ Youngest 2017 nominee: Timothee Chalamet is
22 — 13 years older than Quvenzhane Wallis was in 2013, when she was nominated for the actress honor.
■ Tallest 2017 nominee: Daniel Day-Lewis, at
6 feet 2, heads a notso-tall bunch — only 2 inches taller than Allison Janney, the tallest female nominee.
■ Shortest 2017 nominee: Sally Hawkins, Lesley Manville and Octavia Spencer are 5 feet 2. The shortest man: Sam Rockwell, who stands 5 feet 8.
■ Most previously nominated nominee: Meryl Streep, of course. The 19 other acting nominees have a combined 30 previous nominations; Streep alone has 20. (Note: Composer John Williams has 51 nominations to his credit, and the all-time record-holder is a 59-time nominee, producer Walt Disney.)
■ Most previously nominated actor without a win: Usually this candidate is a solid bet, because the academy goes for people who’ve paid their dues — people such as Leonardo DiCaprio, who two years ago had four previous nominations and no wins but went home with the actor Oscar. Three actors have two previous nods and no wins: Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson and Saoirse Ronan.
■ Most currently nominated: Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro and Jordan Peele have all managed the golden producer/ writer/director trifecta. Mary J. Blige has the unique twofer of nominations for supporting actress and original song. ■ Most previously honored nominee: Daniel Day-Lewis has three best-actor statues; Streep has two for best actress and one for supporting actress. Day-Lewis’ three took just five nominations; Streep’s three took 17.
■ Longest Academy Awards: The 2002 ceremony, which went on for four hours and 16 minutes but seemed much longer.
■ Shortest Academy Awards: The 1929 edition lasted 15 minutes. Those inaugural awards were handed out as an after-dinner bonus at an industry banquet.
