Anderson out with knee injury

After upgrading their roster at the trade deadline, the Blue Jackets learned Tuesday night that they will have to make it through the next month or so without one of their top goal-scorers.

Right wing Josh Anderson, who was injured Monday on a hip check by Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov, has a sprained knee and will miss about four weeks, the team announced. Anderson has 18 goals this season, tied with Artemi Panarin for most on the team, and 11 assists.

Orlov's check sent Anderson into the air and sent him crashing hard to the ice. He left the game immediately. He did not depart with the team on its trip to California, which begins Thursday with a game at the Los Angeles Kings.

Big moment

With the offensive firepower the Capitals have, the game could have turned in a hurry. But the Jackets’ improvingby-the-day penalty kill — minus one of its best in Calvert but still with goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky — kept Washington off the scoreboard.

“I was concerned about those three minutes,” coach John Tortorella said. “We wanted to score the fifth (goal) earlier, but if they get the second one on that power play, then they get amped up. They are a team that can turn the score over pretty quickly. It was a big kill for us.”

Happy homecoming

Mark Letestu reintroduced himself to the home crowd pretty quickly as he was cheered while shown on the center scoreboard during the first stoppage in play. Letestu, who spent four seasons with the Blue Jackets before being reacquired in a deal with Edmonton on Sunday, then scored the team’s third goal.

“I haven't stopped smiling,” Letestu said in the locker room. "It was nice to be back, nice to contribute. The reaction the crowd gave me; that hits you right in the feels. I’m really, really happy to be part of this.”
