Softball records shutout victory on West Coast

Ashley Goodwin and Lilli Piper each hit tworun homers, and the Ohio State softball team shut out San Diego State 7-0 at the Louisville Slugger Invitation­al in Fullerton, California, on Friday.

The win was the seventh straight for the Buckeyes (12-1).

Niki Carver opened the game with a leadoff double, and with two outs, Shelby McCombs doubled Carver in for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Bailee Sturgeon roped a leadoff double down the left-field line, and Lilli Piper got another big two-out hit, homering to left to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead.

Ohio State added four runs on six hits and an error in the seventh. Emily Clark doubled to right field and Goodwin followed up with a two-run shot over the left-field fence. McCombs singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Kallie Boren looped an RBI double to bring home another run. Sturgeon followed with a bunt single before White singled through the left side to drive in the final run.

Morgan Ray (7-1) threw a three-hit complete game. She had two strikeouts and limited the Aztecs (8-13) to five base runners.

Baseball

Ohio State rode three home runs to an 8-6 win over High Point at the Environmen­tal Staffing Chanticlee­r Classic in Conway, South Carolina.

Dominic Canzone was 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBI, and Tyler Cowles was 2 for 5 with a home run, three RBI and stolen base for the Buckeyes (8-4). Conner Pohl had a pair of hits, an RBI and a stolen base, and Brady Cherry had two hits with a run. Kobie Foppe scored twice.

Connor Curlis improved to 3-0, throwing 5 innings and giving up five runs (four earned), six hits, one walk and six strikeouts against the Panthers (5-7). Seth Kinker posted his fourth save of the year after working 1 scoreless innings with one strikeout and three hits.

The Buckeyes jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs on two hits in the top of the first. The big hit came when Cowles punched a 1-and-2 fastball through the right side to score Foppe and Cherry. With runners on first and third, Pohl beat the throw at the plate with a head-first slide on a double steal.

Pohl drove in Ohio State’s fourth run in the third on a single. Canzone made it 6-1 in the fourth when he hit an opposite-field, two-run homer to left. In the fifth, Cowles launched his first home run of the year on a 3-and-1 pitch for a 7-1 advantage. High Point scored five runs in the sixth to make it 7-6, but McGowan gave the Buckeyes some breathing room when he hit his fourth home run of the year in the ninth.

Women’s lacrosse

McKayla Conti scored six goals to lead visiting Ohio State (2-3) to a 14-13 win over Binghamton (3-4).

Baley Parrott added four goals for the Buckeyes, and Sara Dickinson, Alyssa Amorison, Molly Wood and Lindsay Epstein each scored a goal.
