Schools need safety plan, better security

-

Iwant to share my concerns about the safety of my school, Northland High School. After the threats that Columbus City Schools received and the horrific event that happened in Florida, I must say that I don’t feel safe anymore.

I’m not worried just about my safety but also the safety of others. We don’t have a legitimate plan for an active shooter in our school. Most of our doors are surrounded by glass windows, even our classroom doors. Our windows can easily be broken because they are old, and they are low enough to walk through if broken.

I honestly hope that instead of the useless lock-down drills we have, we can have a plan for each class. Teachers aren’t equipped or prepared for an active shooter. We need training.

Hopefully, every single door in our school can be secured. Hopefully, we get bulletproof windows. Hopefully, teachers don’t have to be armed. Hopefully, students don’t feel the need to be armed. Hopefully, the security system changes, not just at my school but all Columbus City Schools, all schools in Ohio and, hopefully, every single school in this country.

But all I can do is hope.
