Cozy cafe offers twists on comfort-food classics

In the center of historic downtown Canal Winchester, the Harvest Moon Craft Kitchen serves a bustling breakfast throughout the week and on Saturdays.

The breakfast menu — augmented by coffee, smoothies, house-made juices and cocktails — is comforting and offers some unusual finds.

Coffee ($1.75, or $3 for bottomless) comes from Rost Coffee in Chillicoth­e. Espresso drinks are available as well; the cappuccino ($4 to 4.50) was artfully prepared, as was the balanced and zesty bloody mary ($9).

The traditiona­l breakfast ($6.79) marries the classics: two eggs cooked to order, lightly seasoned diced potatoes, turkey bacon and a large slice of toast. The turkey bacon is the default offering on most breakfast dishes, although pork bacon is available.

Breakfast diners can build an omelet ($4.49, $1 to $5 for each additional ingredient). The fluffy, filling omelets come with a slice of toast.

The house hash ($8.99) is a winning

combinatio­n of sweet potatoes, onions, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, apples and garlic, all topped with provolone cheese and two eggs cooked to order. The dish is flavorful and filling.

The breakfast burrito ($6.99) takes many of the same ingredient­s (minus the apples and sprouts) and combines them with two eggs, turkey bacon and
