Castillo takes lumps in loss

Adam Eaton, the Miami University product, did a lot of damage for the Nationals. He went 5 for 5 with two doubles. a home run, four runs scored and three RBI.

Castillo had trouble with his command early. Half of his first 16 pitches were balls. His 17th pitch was a 97 mph, thigh-high fastball to Matt Adams, who crushed it for a 460-foot home run to right-center field.

And the Reds were down 3-0.

Things didn’t get much better for Castillo the rest of the way. He had a 1-2-3 second. But he gave up single runs in the third, fourth and fifth.

The Reds did not score until Scott Schebler homered with two outs in the fourth. That made it 5-1.

Scooter Gennett had an RBI single and Adam Duvall had a sacrifice fly in the sixth as the Reds cut it to 6-3.

But Reds reliever Austin Brice gave up Eaton’s homer in the seventh and Jackson Stephens allowed a pair of runs in the eighth to make it 9-3.

Duvall’s first home run of the season — a two-run shot in the eighth — made it 9-5.

Kevin Quackenbus­h gave up a grand slam to the Nationals’ Brian Goodwin in the ninth to make it 13-5.

Eugenio Suarez homered and drove in Jesse Winker in the bottom of the ninth for the Reds.
