Clippers bullpen again in the eighth. Reliever Louis Head faced Goeddel after loading the bases with two outs by walking D.J. Peterson, allowing a single to Tony Cruz and walking Blake Trahan. Goeddel sent a line drive into right field to give the Bats a 7-1 lead.

Clippers starter Alexi Ogando allowed four hits in 3 innings, walking three and striking out none. He gave up an RBI single to Peterson in second. Leathersic­h, Head and Neil Ramirez combined to allow three hits and five earned runs.

The Clippers took a 1-0 lead when Yandy Diaz singled home Greg Allen, who led off the first with a double.

Bats starter Justin Nicolino (1-0) allowed just the one run in five innings. He gave up three hits, struck out six and walked three.

The 76ers overcame a tough outing for rookie star Ben Simmons, who missed the morning shootaroun­d after coming down with the stomach flu. He still managed to put up 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists before fouling out with 7 seconds remaining.

Simmons picked up a technical in the third quarter for arguing all the way down the court about a call that didn’t go his way.
