Phillies finish three-game sweep of Reds

-

The Cincinnati Reds closed out their first trip of the season 1-6 Wednesday night, falling 4-3 in 12 innings to the Philadelphia Phillies for a threegame series sweep.

A throwing error in the bottom of the 12th by Scooter Gennett let Phillies leadoff hitter Pedro Florimon reach second base against reliever Austin Brice (0-1). Florimon then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Scott Kingery.

Gennett tied the score at 3 in the ninth when he reached base on a double, went to third on a single by catcher Devin Mesoraco and came home on a hit by Phillip Ervin that went into center field. In the 10th, Joey Votto singled with two outs and then Gennett put another good swing on one to deep center, but Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera robbed him of a potential tworun homer.

Reds starter Luis Castillo pitched six innings with three earned runs on five hits and four strikeouts, but he allowed two home runs, to J.P. Crawford in the second and Cesar Hernandez in the fifth.

Votto also had an RBI and a run scored.

Phillies reliever Yacksel Rios got the final out for his first win of the season. Starter Nick Pivetta lasted seven innings, allowing five hits, two runs, no walks and seven strikeouts.

ROCKIES 6, PADRES 4: Colorado's Nolan Arenado charged the mound in the third after a fastball from Luis Perdomo sailed behind him, setting off a heated brawl that resulted in five ejections at San Diego. The Rockies scoring five times in the inning to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. TWINS 9, ASTROS 8: Max Kepler hit his second home run of the game, connecting for a solo drive with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, as host Minnesota bounced back from a late collapse to beat Houston. After the Twins blew an 8-1 lead, Kepler homered off Brad Peacock (1-1). Kepler also hit a two-run homer to cap an eightrun fourth, an inning that included Eddie Rosario's bases-loaded triple. BRAVES 5, NATIONALS 3: Peter Bourjos drove in two runs with a basesloaded single in the 12th inning and visiting Atlanta's bullpen finally made a lead stand up. Bourjos delivered the go-ahead hit off Ryan Madson (0-1) with one out in the 12th. Rookie Shane Carle, Atlanta's seventh pitcher, threw the last two innings for the win, but he blew a save chance in the 11th, giving up Howie Kendrick's two-out double to make it 3-3.
