OSU men’s volleyball wins MIVA championsh­ip

Jake Hanes had 13 kills and Nicolas Szerszen had 12 kills to lead Ohio State to a 3-0 victory over Loyola-Chicago on Saturday night in the finals of the Midwestern Intercolle­giate Volleyball Associatio­n tournament at St. John Arena.

Two-time defending national champion Ohio State (23-5) won 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 to advance to the NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday. The NCAA will announce the tournament schedule Sunday.

Pete Hanson became the third coach in NCAA men's volleyball history to reach 700 total career victories, joining Al Scates of UCLA and Don Shondell of Ball State.

Men's gymnastics

Alec Yoder finished third with 82.631 points in the all-around and Sean Melton was eighth (81.498) in the finals of the NCAA men's championsh­ips in Chicago. Yoder took fourth in pommel and seventh in parallel bars. Melton's top finishes were 12th in the floor exercise and 12th in the rings.

Baseball

Noah McGowan hit a solo homer for the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Ohio State beat No. 8 Indiana 5-4 at Bill Davis Stadium. McGowan's twoout shot to left field, his eighth of the season, gave OSU (26-11, 7-4 Big Ten) a 5-4 lead. Scotty Bradley had three hits for Indiana (29-7, 7-3).

Women's golf

Rio Watanabe shot a second-round 67 to lead third-place Ohio State, which closed to three strokes back of leader Michigan State in the Big Ten championsh­ips at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville. Ohio State sits at 5-under-par 571. Michigan State leads at 568 and Maryland is at 569. OSU's Jaclyn Lee shot a 4-under 68 to keep the individual lead at 10-under 134. Watanabe, Michigan State's Allyson Greer and Maryland's Xiaolin Tian are a stroke back.

Men's golf

Michael Sharp of Michigan State holds a two-stroke lead at 5-under 137 in the Robert Kepler Intercolle­giate at the Ohio State Scarlet Course. Second-round play was suspended due to darkness at 8 p.m. and will resume Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Will Voetsch of Ohio State was tied for fifth through 15 holes when play was suspended. Illinois has the team lead at 3 under par and Ohio State is five strokes back in fourth.
