Doctor sentenced after causing miscarriag­e

A Washington-area doctor was sentenced to three years in prison for slipping an abortion pill into his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s drink, causing her to miscarry.

Sikander Imran, a former doctor at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, was sentenced Friday after his former girlfriend, Brook Fiske, asked a judge for a more-lenient punishment, ABC affiliate WJLA reported.

Imran was charged last June with premeditat­ed

killing of a fetus of another and illegally causing abortion or miscarriag­e. Online records show he was also charged in November with assault and altering food, drink and drugs. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to fetal homicide.

Fiske was 17 weeks pregnant when she miscarried.

2 Palestinia­ns die after being shot on Monday

Gaza’s health ministry said two Palestinia­ns died days after they were shot and wounded by Israeli gunfire during border protests.

The ministry said Saturday the two, aged 20 and 58 respective­ly, had been in critical condition.

The two were shot on Monday, when Israeli troops killed 59 Palestinia­ns in what turned out to be the deadliest day of cross-border violence in recent years.

Gas leak causes plant explosion in Houston

Officials say a gas leak caused an explosion and brief flash fire at a chemical plant near Houston, resulting in non-life threatenin­g injuries to nearly two dozen workers.

Kurary America said ethylene escaping from a safety valve caught fire Saturday at the company’s EVAL plant in Pasadena, where 266 workers were on site.

Ethylene is a gas that is not harmful to humans and is used in the production of plastic.

Japanese film wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

“Shoplifter­s,” Japanese director Hizokazu Kore-eda’s tender portrait of a poor, improvised family, won the Palme d’Or, the top award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Musician Reggie Lucas won a Grammy during career

Reggie Lucas, the Grammy-winning musician who played with Miles Davis in the 1970s and produced the bulk of Madonna’s debut album, has died. He was 65.

The performer’s daughter, Lisa Lucas, said her father died from heart complicati­ons early Saturday in New York City.

Lucas, along with percussion­ist James Mtume, also wrote hits like Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s “The Closer I Get to You” and Stephanie Mills’ “Never Knew Love Like This Before,” which won the duo the Grammy for best R&B song.

Series of explosions leaves several dead

At least eight people were killed and dozens of others wounded in a series of blasts at a cricket match in eastern Afghanista­n, officials said.

An attack on an Afghan cricket match is highly unusual. The sport has been one of the few rallying points that have brought together supporters of both the government and Taliban militants.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid issued a statement denying that the group was involved in the attack late Friday on the stadium in the city of Jalalabad.
