Reds 5-0, Cubs 4-10

CINCINNATI — Several innings after the benches cleared because of tempers flaring, the Cincinnati Reds rushed out of the dugout once again in the bottom of the 11th inning to celebrate a 5-4 victory when Billy Hamilton drew a bases-loaded walk in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Chicago Cubs reliever Justin Wilson walked three batters in the 11th inning, and he walked Hamilton on five pitches for the literal walk-off ending in front of 19,046 fans at Great American Ball Park.

In the second game, Ian Happ hit his second home run of the doubleheader, Jason Heyward tied his career high with four RBI and Jose Quintana (5-3) allowed one hit in seven shutdown innings as the Cubs earned the split with a 10-0 victory.

Wilson threw 18 pitches to end the first game, and only six landed in the strike zone. When Hamilton Billy Hamilton, middle, celebrates with Reds teammates after drawing a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning off the Cubs’ Justin Wilson, which allowed Scott Schebler to score the winning run in the first game.

stepped into the batter’s box, the Reds were out of pinchhitters and reliever Dylan Floro was in the on-deck circle.

“If he was going to throw a strike at me, I had to put the ball in play,” Hamilton said. Instead, Scott Schebler trotted to the plate for the winning run.

There weren’t as many smiles and high-fives when the benches emptied earlier.

Reds reliever Amir Garrett struck out Javier Baez to end the top of the seventh inning. Garrett let out a scream on the mound, and Baez stared at him. Cubs manager Joe Maddon described it as a “Lion

King type of a roar.”

Garrett and Baez exchanged words before Baez walked toward Garrett, which prompted the benches to clear. A few players needed to be held back after some shoving, but nobody was ejected.

Happ lined a fullcount fastball into the seats in left-center to help the Cubs tied it at 4 in the eighth off Raisel Iglesias.

In the second game, Quintana kept the Reds hitless through four innings before Schebler singled with one out in the fifth.
