Clippers set doubleheader after rainout

-

Saturday night’s game between the Clippers and Buffalo Bisons at Huntington Park was postponed because of rain.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at Huntington Park, starting at 1:05 p.m. The second game will start 30 minutes after the first game finishes.

Both games will be seven innings.

Zimmer sent down to work on swing

The Cleveland Indians sent center fielder Bradley Zimmer to the Clippers on Tuesday to work on reducing his strikeouts and making more contact. But that’s not how they explained it to him.

“The last thing we want him to do is just swing at 60 percent and try to hit the ball in the infield,” Indians manager Terry Francona said.

Francona and general manager Chris Antonetti asked Zimmer what he thought of his swing. Zimmer said he knew that changes had to be made, but right now he is still trying to define himself as a hitter.

He has the speed of a leadoff hitter and a lot of untapped power. But when he was sent down, he was striking

IL UPDATE out 42 percent of the time. As Francona told him, if he is going to strike out that much, he must do a lot of damage when he does hit the ball.

But if Zimmer starts swinging for the fences, his speed goes to waste.

The Indians want Zimmer to find a happy medium. In three games with the Clippers so far, Zimmer is 1 for 14 — his one hit was a solo homer in a 1-for-5 effort, and he also had 0-for-4 and 0-for-5 games.

Plutko gets nod for start over Bieber

The Indians couldn’t have made a bad choice when it came to picking a starter for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Their choices were Adam Plutko or Shane Bieber, both starting for the Clippers in triple-A. The nod went to Plutko, who threw a no-hitter on June 2 for Columbus and is 3-0 with a 3.93 ERA for the Indians this season.

Francona said Plutko and Beiber were both available to pitch Tuesday.

Plutko is 5-3 with a 1.83 ERA in nine starts with Columbus. Bieber, who made his bigleague debut on May 31 against the Twins, is 2-1 with a 1.41 ERA for the Clippers.
